Years 5 + 6

Welcome to Foundation Stage! We work with children from three to five years and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. We have a FS1 Base (Nursery) and a FS2 Base (Reception). The teachers in FS1 are Mrs Hotchkiss and Miss Hotchkiss who are supported by Curriculum Specialist Mrs Byrne and Teaching Assistants Mrs Stephens and Mrs Harrison. In FS2 the teachers are Mrs Bell and Mrs Hurst who are supported by Teaching Assistants Miss Shaw and Miss Crooks.

During children’s time in Foundation Stage they will cover three prime areas of learning through child led and adult led activities. The prime areas are: Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. These prime areas are the most essential to a child’s healthy development and future learning.

They will also cover four specific areas which are: Literacy, Mathematical Development, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. We work closely together as a Foundation Stage team and with the rest of Angram Bank School. We take part in Achievement Day, termly Parents Evening, parent workshops and fundraising events. Children get on the Angram Bank bus in our Foundation Stage and continue on an exciting learning journey!

Stamina, strength and cycling
Today, many of the Y5s took part in a cycling event at Angram Bank. Courses were set up on the school field and all the children took part in a variety of different events.

The first event was an obstacle course with ramps and a tricky slalom to navigate through!

Then we moved on to a distance race, the entire way around the school field! This included some tough hills to ride up and down.

The next race was a slow race... and the Y5s certainly needed something slower after using so much energy. The winner was the last person to cross the finish line. Not as easy as it seems!

It was a great afternoon! All the children showed amazing stamina and resilience and made all the teachers proud. Well done to everyone who took part!

New Playground
We are very excited to introduce our new PEZ (Primary Exercise Zone) on the junior playground!

The paintwork doesn't only look impressive but it is designed to be multi-purpose and will encourage and support children in PE lessons, afterschool clubs and in break times. It is a 'non-slip' surface which means children can really take off around the track safely. The PEZ will be opened on Monday 8th April after the Easter holidays to all children. Feel free to come and see it yourself and have a race (or two) after the holidays! Thank you to Sponsor Sport GB who installed the PEZ. Here are some before and after photos!

Online consent!
Last week, was safer internet week at Angram Bank!
In Y5, we learnt all about consent online.

We found out that if you sign up to apps and websites, you have to agree to their terms and conditions and sometimes there may be things that we shouldn't say yes to.

For example, if you post a picture on instagram, instagram can sell this and make money from it, BUT they don't have to give you a penny!

Also, any information that you put on social networking sites can be saved and shared by the companies. Often they will sell or share this information so that you get targeted advertisements to your mobile phone or computer.

We also learnt that you have to be 13 to sign up to a lot of these social media sites - even ones where you can just add your friends like whatsapp and snapchat!

We learnt that it's a good idea to read the terms and conditions carefully to find out what we are consenting to.

Handball
Exciting news! Years five and six have the opportunity to attend an afterschool competition at Ecclesfield Secondary school on the 22nd January.

Children will begin training for this event this week in PE sessions and in lunchtime clubs with Miss Heath and Miss Nicholson. Our Arches' afterschool club on Wednesdays (which starts this week) complements this competition too! We are really working hard to 'raise the bar' of our expectations and achievements.

Letters for selected children will go out this week!

TOFFEE Music

As part of our World War Two learning enquiry, TOFFEE Music came in to host an exclusive concert for our year 5 and 6 children.

The children (and teachers) loved having a good sing-a-long to different songs including 'We'll meet again', 'Seigfried Line' and 'Run Rabbit'.

Here are some photos from our afternoon concert.
